Things we should all be taught in school that just don't make it into the curriculum

As a Holistic Therapist for Women, If I had the chance to rewrite the Life Orientation curriculum, these are the areas I’d focus on—real, empowering knowledge that supports kids in growing into emotionally intelligent, self-aware, and resilient humans.

Side note: LO should be one of the most important and time-rich subjects in school. Imagine a space where kids feel safe to ask real questions, be curious, explore big feelings, and learn practical tools for navigating life. All guided by informed, grounded adults who are genuinely comfortable talking about these topics—with compassion and clarity.

So here are the things, I believe, we should all be taught in school:

Emotional Literacy

Learn to identify your own emotions, name them and have tools to feel , process and release them.

AI, Social Media, Tech and the developing brain

Know how your developing brain is influenced by these things and how to actively protect yourself, while maintaining healthy relationships with these important tools

Holistic Nutrition

The importance of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle. Where our food comes from, sustainable regenerative farming and intuitive eating. What a healthy diet actually looks life. Rituals and history around food and sharing meals within community.

ree

Self-regulation skills

Knowing the ABCs of how to regulate yourself when big emotions surface and real life challenges arise.

Healthy communication

How to 'fight fair' in relationships, communicate your needs and set healthy boundaries. Know what red flags versus green flags look like in relationships and friendships.

ree

Financial Literacy

Real life skills that every adult needs to know. The importance of savings and investments. How to do your taxes, creating a monthly budget and feeling empowered to make good financial decisions.

And if you’re reading this as an adult thinking, “I never learned this… but I need to,” you're not alone. Learning is a lifelong journey and while we should have been taught these things in school, it's never too late to learn.

Therapy is often the process of unlearning what no longer serves you—and building new tools, language, and mental habits that help you live more fully, more freely, and more in tune with yourself. That is why I offer a holistic approach to therapy, where there is room for teaching and offering tools for life.
