Morning Rituals

Updated: Apr 5, 2023

Do you have any special morning rituals that you treasure?

The way you start your day is super important as it sets the tone for the rest of the day.

It's become increasingly difficult for me to set time for my daily rituals as my therapy practice has grown. I find myself falling into the trap of working at times where I used to embrace spending time with myself. While this is a blessing which I am so grateful for, it means I have to work harder at making time for me. Mornings are my favourite because of fresh morning air, it gives me a feeling of a new start.

I don't do the same thing every morning but I do stick to some basics that allow me flexibility depending on how much time I have.

  1. I wake up a half hour earlier than the time I HAVE to. (I'm not a very early riser but I do always enjoy the quiet morning time when I do get up a little earlier)

  2. I lie in bed and stretch my body in all different directions and just notice how my body is feeling.

  3. The first thing I do as I get up is open the blinds and notice how the sky and the trees look that day. It's usually just before the sun comes up properly, then I wait and look for the moment when the sunlight hits the trees for just a few minutes, it makes me feel like I'm not rising alone.

  4. I make the bed and walk around opening up all the blinds in our apartment and some windows for fresh morning air and say hi to our neighbors cat

  5. At this point my mind is already a busy bee so I make an effort to remind myself to slow down and that I have time).

  6. From there I make time for either: movement; reading; journaling; music or meditation; or sometimes a combination of the above (with black coffee following closely, of course)

  7. I check my emails and WhatsApps and run through my schedule for the day

  8. I start working (however that may look).

So a nice slow start is important to me. It fuels me for my day.
